Won’t close Delhi air pollution matter, will continue hearing: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has decided not to give any final order in the Delhi air pollution matter. It has said it will continue hearing the case even if the pollution reduces.

“We are not going to close this case. Even if pollution goes down now, we will continue to hear this case and issue directions. Take the measures for next three days. We will hear it again on Monday. In the meantime if situation improves, lift some bans,” the court said.

The air quality index (AQI) of Delhi has been bad for three weeks now. On Wednesday morning, it was ‘very poor’.

The Apex Court pointed that it was the national capital. “Look at the signal we are sending to the world. You have to predict the situation based on statistics… and take action in anticipation so that the situation does not go severe.”

On the matter of stubble burning contributing to Delhi air pollution, the court was told that the issue needed to be taken care of. “If farmers are compensated, farm fires can be controlled,” lawyer Vikas Singh submitted.

To this, the court said, “Has there been any study on how much stubble has been removed in Punjab, Haryana, and UP? This is going to be a big problem. How are you going to tackle the stubble-burning issue? We are using our common sense in discussing this issue. What is the bureaucracy doing?”

The bench asked why secretaries could not go to the fields and speak to farmers and scientists and devise a permanent solution.

Earlier, the Apex Court had reprimanded the Centre and state governments for dragging their feet on the matter of tackling air pollution.
