Witness in Bilkis Bano case attacked by two convicts out on parole

An inquiry has been ordered into a case in which a witness in the Bilkis Bano case (of the 2002 Gujarat riots) was allegedly threatened by two of the convicts who were out on parole. The Inspector General (IG) of police in Godhra, Panchmahals range, MS Bharada has sought an inquiry into the matter.

As per an application filed by one Feroz Ghanchi, a witness in the Bilkis Bano case, a woman and her daughter who lives in the same neighbourhood as Ghanchi were harassed by riots accused Mitesh Bhatt and Radheshyam Shah, and his brother Ashish Shah. Mitesh and Radheshyam were convicted in the case and were out on parole from jail. As per the complaint, Radheshyam, who was a lawyer by profession had called the women, one Sabera and her daughter, at home to discuss pending payment for an earlier accident case he had fought for them.

But he began to shoot videos of the two women and then began assaulting them. Mitesh also joined in and so did Ashish. The woman escaped and was walking on the road when the men continued to follow them. When Feoz intervened to stop the harassment of the women, he was attacked by the three men who told him that it was because of him that Mitesh and Radheshyam had to go to jail. The incident was allegedly recorded in a CCTV camera.

The accused has alleged that the women and he approached the Randhikpur police station where they submitted an application in this regard. However, no FIR was registered even after two days. The police allegedly recorded statements of both the sides and asked them to amicably resolve the matter among themselves. That is when Feroz approached the Range IG in the matter.
