India recorded a new high in the number of daily COVID-19 cases for the second straight day. The country registered 7,964 new cases in the last 24 hours taking the total number of such cases to 173,763. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of fresh cases in a single day.
As many as 2,682 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 62,228. Mumbai accounted for 50% of the new cases being reported.
Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Uttarakhand also witnessed a spike in daily cases.
With 265 new deaths in the last 24 hours, the country recorded the biggest spike in death toll due to the disease. The total number of COVID-19 fatalities now stands at 4,971. Maharashtra accounted for 50% of the total fatalities in India.
The number of active coronavirus patients stood at 86,422.
Tamil Nadu recorded over 800 positive cases taking the total tally to 20,246. It is the only state after Maharashtra to record over 20,000 cases. Delhi recorded over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases taking the total to 17,386.
