Covid19 cases in Gujarat crossed the 5,000 mark on Saturday with the state recording 333 new cases and 26 deaths in a span of 24 hours. In all 5,054 cases have been recorded in the state so far and this is the fourth straight day when the number of positive cases have crossed the over 300 mark.
Ahmedabad with 3,543 cases continues to be severely impacted. The district reported 250 new cases and has registered 185 deaths so far. The rate at which new infections are being reported is quite high in the city. Ahmedabad had reported its first case on March 20 and now it has reached 3,543 by May 1 – a span of just 1 month and over 10 days. 26 deaths being reported on Saturday is also the highest to be reported in a day. The total death toll in the state due to the disease now stands at 262.
Gujarat ranks second in the country in number of Covid cases and has around 9 districts in the red zone. The major cities of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara are also in the red zone although the number of cases in the latter two are far less than that in Ahmedabad.
