New Delhi: The CBI will probe cases of murder and rape during the post-elections violence in West Bengal earlier this year. The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered court-monitored probe by the agency in these cases.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be set up for investigation into other offences, the court has ordered. The SIT will have senior officers from West Bengal cadre.
The Calcutta HC was hearing a set of PILs on the violence that ensued after Assembly elections in West Bengal.
Several petitioners had approached the High Court alleging widespread violence in the state after the elections which saw the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress return to power.
The allegations were as serious as rape and murder, besides damage to property.
The NHRC, in its report, had lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee government for alleged lapses in ensuring law and order in the state. It had suggested probe by a central agency in the cases.
