Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Cabinet minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Saturday for alleged involvement in the SSC recruitment scam.
The former education minister was produced before the Bankshal Court.
Earlier, over Rs 21 crore cash was found from the house of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of Partha Chatterjee, during an overnight raid by the ED. A truck carrying boxes was brought in to take the cash out of the house. Arpita has been detained by ED.
The agency also searched Chatterjee’s residence.
Besides Arpita, the ED also has another woman, Monalisa Das, on its radar. She reportedly has several properties in her name.
“Searches were conducted in 14 locations out of which two were suspicious including Arpita Mukherjee’s residence. Documents recovered from her house shows direct linking and exchange of money between two parties,” ANI quoted ED.
Chatterjee’s lawyer argued that no money was recovered from his client’s residence. “No special permission was taken to arrest him as he is a public servant. In primary offenses, he has appeared whenever he was called, this time there was no summons,” he added.
