Chief minister Vijay Rupani has announced Rs 4 lakh compensation for the families of each of the two people killed in a wall collapse incident in Rajkot on Monday.
Earlier the state government had also ordered the Rajkot district collector to carry out a magisterial inquiry into the incident in which the retaining wall of an underpass on the Rajkot-Gondal National Highway collapsed in the rain.
Around 20 mts of the wall built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had collapsed following rains at around 11 am on Monday. Two commuters who were passing by the service road died after the wall fell on them. The locals had to call a JCB to rescue the two commuters who unfortunately died on the spot. The overbridge was constructed in the year 2008. The NHAI has also asked the SVNIT Surat to carry out an investigation as to why the wall collapsed.
A CCTV video of the collapse also showed a truck having a narrow escape in the incident. The incident had also raised concerns about the quality of the overbridge from where many people commute on a daily basis.
