Gandhinagar: Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s resignation on Saturday took everyone by surprise. While Rupani said at a press conference after his resignation that he had stepped down willingly, speculations are rife about the actual reason for his exit.

The change of guard in Gujarat comes just ahead of the crucial Assembly elections next year. Hence, the sudden development has created quite a stir. However, Rupani is not the first chief minister in a BJP-led government to leave the position before the end of term.

Earlier this year, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat stepped down in March. He was replaced by Tirath Singh Rawat who, too, could not hold the chair for long. After just 114 days in office, Tirath Singh resigned as CM. He was succeeded by Pushar Singh Dhami.

In Karnataka, BS Yediyurappa resigned on July 26 after two years as the CM. He was replaced by Basavaraj Bommai

It remains to be seen who will succeed Rupani.
