Varanasi: Videography inside the Gyanvapi Masjid complex in Varanasi began on Saturday amid heavy police deployment in the area. According to Varanasi police commissioner A Satish Ganesh, the process was conducted peacefully and would continue on Sunday.
He was quoted by ANI as saying, “The entire process is going on quite smoothly. It’s the court’s direction, our duty is that it’s implemented. We made all security arrangements, and till now everything is underway in a peaceful environment.”
He later said, “Today’s survey was conducted by the commission, and it will continue further tomorrow. Necessary security arrangements have been made.”
RS Gautam, DCP Kashi Zone, was quoted by ANI as saying, “There is robust arrangement to ensure that the people don’t face any inconvenience, the darshan takes place well and everything goes on well.”
The Varanasi court had on Thursday ordered resumption of videography at Gyanvapi Masjid on Saturday and a report to be submitted by May 17. It was hearing a petition by a group of women seeking permission for prayers at a Hindu temple behind the western wall of the mosque.
An earlier attempt at videography had been halted over allegations that the in-charge officer was biased. The mosque administration had sought appointment of a new officer.
According to reports, 52 persons, including survey team members, petitioners, respondents and administration officers entered the site on Saturday.
