Vice-Presidential elections today; Jagdeep Dhankar headed for comfortable win

New Delhi: The Vice-Presidential elections of India will be held on Saturday. Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar is the ruling NDA candidate while former Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva is the Opposition candidate.

The elections will be held in the Parliament between 10 am and 5 pm, with results likely to be out by evening.

The winner will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu, whose term ends on August 10, as the next Vice-President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

A total of 780 MPs from the Upper and Lower House will vote in the polls.

BJP alone has 303 members in Lok Sabha and 91 in Rajya Sabha. Jagdeep Dhankar also has the support of BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), BSP, JDU, TDP, AIADMK and YSRCP, and is expected to comfortably win the election.

Meanwhile, AIMIM and JMM has pledged support to Opposition candidate Alva in the Vice-Presidential elections. TMC has said it will abstain from voting.
