Street vendors, particularly those selling vegetables, who have been identified as super spreaders of Covid19 will now need to go through a screening process by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Vijay Nehra, AMC Commissioner, said that the vendors who have undergone screening will then be given a card to continue their business. The card will be valid for a week. Another card, valid for a week will again be issued only after the vendors undergo a second screening. The cards will be issued by the Estate department of the AMC.
Several of the over 3000 people who have been found to be Covid positive in Ahmedabad happen to be vendors and the AMC has identified them as super spreaders. Super spreaders refer to an infected person who is capable of spreading the infection to an unusually large number of people. Most of such super spreaders in Ahmedabad have been vegetable vendors.
In an attempt to curb the spread of infection by super spreaders the civic body had also hiked the fine from May 1 onwards for fruit and vegetable vendors as well as supermarket employees if they were found not wearing masks. The fine was hiked to Rs2,000 for street vendors, Rs5,000 for milk parlours and Rs50,000 for supermarkets.
