Vehicle accidents decline by 13.52% in Gujarat post the amendment in Motor Vehicles Act

Post the introduction of the amended Motor Vehicles Act last year, there has been a significant reduction in road accidents in the country, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Responding to a supplementary question raised by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member Mohammad Faizal PP from Lakshadweep, the minister said the introduction of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 has led to a significant decline in road crashes across the country.

According to the data tabled by the minister, the number of road accidents in Gujarat has reduced by 13.52 per cent when the data for the five-month period before and after the implementation of the amended Act is compared. Notably, Gujarat registered 7,304 vehicle accidents between April to August 2019, whereas the figure dropped to 6,316 for the period between September 2019 and January 2020.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has recorded a decline of 12.75 per cent in vehicle accidents, whereas most other states reported a decline of less than 10 per cent.

Gadkari informed that the government is planning to start roadside amenities like shopping centre, petrol pumps, toilets under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Replying to a question about the commercial use of the land along the highways, he said, “The amenities will include markets and restaurants offering special food and handicraft items of that area”.

The minister also said the government has launched a unique scheme for identification and removal of black spots from the national and state highways so that the deaths on these spots can be avoided. Revealing the details in the Lok Sabha during the Question Hour, Gadkari said in every district, the government will take help of engineering, diploma and ITI students to identify black spots in their area. A committee under the chairmanship of MPs will also inspect the road quality in their area so that the dangerous spots can be identified and removed, he added.

As per the Gujarat Transport Department, the state registered 19,081 accident cases in 2017. The department, thereafter, has not updated the data on its website.
