Tamil Nadu leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy became an overnight sensation when he was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for an astonishing Rs 8.4 crore at the auctions prior to IPL 2019, making him the costliest KXIP player then. Varun, well-known thanks to his performances in the local Tamil Nadu T20 tournament, impressed then franchise captain R Ashwin to no end.

He, however, had a rather forgettable debut IPL season where he played just one game and did not feature in the rest of the tournament.

A talented player, Varun Chakravarthy, was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020 to beef up their spin bowling department. And, in IPL 2020, he impressed everyone from the BCCI selectors to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Selected in Team India, praised by Sachin

Notably, the Indian selectors are so impressed by Varun Chakravarthy’s performance in the IPL that he has been selected for the Indian team for the T20 Internationals against Australia.

Not just the selectors, but Sachin Tendulkar also showered praise on Varun Chakravarthy, who on Monday earned his maiden India call-up for T20 Internationals. Tendulkar said he is impressed by the mystery spinner’s variations and calm head during the ongoing IPL in the UAE.

“Varun has been bowling well throughout this tournament (IPL). And very rarely he has given a little more runs at this level,” Tendulkar said in a video.

“… what happens is everybody is seeing how will Sunil Narine bowl, so normally when Narine bowls, there is more pressure on the bowler from the other end and batsman try and attack him more.”

The 29-year-old Chennai born Chakravarthy, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders, has picked up 13 wickets to be the leading wicket-taker for his side. He has also picked up the first five-wicket haul of this IPL. In the domestic circuit, he plays for Tamil Nadu.

According to Tendulkar, Chakravarthy has not rattled despite bowling most of the times in pressure situations.

“Varun has been extremely successful and the variation which I am seeing, the confidence which I am seeing, he is able to disguise the balls, googlies,” said Tendulkar.

“He has been a consistent performer and I am impressed with his performance because he has bowled in many pressure situations and he has not been rattled in those situations. He looked pretty balanced and confident,” said the batting maestro.
