Vadodara youth who hurled rape threats at stand-up comedian arrested


Vadodara police late on Sunday arrested Shubham Mishra, 26, for posting a video in which he gave rape threats and abused a female comedian. The video of Mishra threatening the comedian Agrima Joshua over a one year old video about Shivaji’s statue in Mumbai went viral on social media and created a lot of outrage. Many had tagged the Vadodara police asking them to take action against Mishra. He later took down the video and apologised for his comments.

The video was originally posted on Mishra’s Instagram account on Saturday. Vadodara City Police took suo moto action against Mishra for uploading and sharing the video.

“We have detained him and initiated legal process for registration of FIR against him under relevant section of IPC and IT act,” police said on Twitter.

Earlier the National Commission for Women had also sought action against Mishra and the commission’s chairperson Rekha Sharma had written to Gujarat’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shivanand Jha in this connection.

“Following @NCWIndia Chairperson @sharmarekha’s letter to #DGPGujarat, Vadodara Police has arrested Shubham Mishra. #NCW hopes this would be a lesson for all those who threaten women online. We are committed towards ensuring safety and security of #women,” the NCW tweeted.
