Matter of pride for Indians as vaccines ‘Made in India’: PM Modi

Moments after the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) approved two COVID-19 vaccines for restricted emergency use, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it will accelerate the journey to a healthier and COVID-free nation. He also said that the vaccines are a matter of pride for Indians as they are ‘Made in India’.

PM Modi tweets

PM Modi took to Twitter to congratulate the scientific community that have made the vaccines possible. He posted a series of tweets on the development.

He said, “A decisive turning point to strengthen a spirited fight! DCGI granting approval to vaccines of @SerumInstIndia and @BharatBiotech accelerates the road to a healthier and COVID-free nation. Congratulations India. Congratulations to our hardworking scientists and innovators.”

He also said, “It would make every Indian proud that the two vaccines that have been given emergency use approval are made in India! This shows the eagerness of our scientific community to fulfil the dream of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, at the root of which is care and compassion.”

PM Modi further said, “We reiterate our gratitude to doctors, medical staff, scientists, police personnel, sanitation workers and all Corona warriors for the outstanding work done, that too in adverse circumstances. We will remain eternally grateful to them for saving many lives.”

Union home minister Amit Shah also tweeted about the approval of the vaccines and how they are a major boost for the PM Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

“Visionary leadership can make a huge difference. Time and again, we have seen a New India eager to innovate & help the humanity during crisis. The approval to Made in India vaccines will prove to be a game-changer in boosting PM @NarendraModi’s vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he tweeted.

DCGI approves vaccine

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Sunday granted “restricted emergency use” authorisation to the vaccines being manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech. The move comes at a time when COVID-19 cases in the country have already crossed 1.03 crore and the death toll is nearing 1.5 lakh.

The approval was granted by DCGI on the basis of recommendations of the subject expert committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). The committee had met on January 1 and 2 to decide on the issue.
