Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has announced Covid-related restrictions ahead of Uttarayan to prevent spread of coronavirus. The restrictions will be in place from January 11 to 17.

Uttarayan is celebrated in Gujarat on January 14 and 15, with people gathering in groups on terraces and at open places to fly kites. The crowding could result in virus transmission, a risk the government cannot afford amid rising cases of Covid-19 in the last few days.

Hence, the restrictions have been announced to prevent large gatherings.

According to the rules, gathering at public places, open grounds or roads to fly kites will not be allowed.

It has been advised that only close family members and relatives come together for celebration.

Wearing a mask will be mandatory while flying kites on terrace of flats or in society gardens. Also, revellers will have to ensure social distancing.

Large gatherings will not be allowed on terraces or common plots/gardens of residential buildings and societies.

Use of loud speakers, DJ or music systems has been prohibited.

People aged over 65, those with co-morbidities, pregnant women and children below 10 years of age have been advised to remain indoors.

Slogans, messages or images that could hurt public sentiments or threaten peace will not be allowed to be printed or written on kites.

Use of Chinese sky lanterns, Chinese manja, plastic thread for flying kites and other such harmful items continue to be banned for Uttarayan celebrations.
