Uttar Pradesh: 9 dead, 30 injured in road accident


In an unfortunate incident, at least nine people lost their lives and over 30 others got injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a bus collided in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit on Saturday. The bus belongs to Uttar Pradesh roadways.

Both, passengers of the bus as well as the SUV, died in the accident that took place nearly 40 km away from the district headquarters.

Police said the accident occurred near a blind turn on road near Sehramau under Puranpur police station area at around 4 am. A team of local police reached the spot within minutes and began rescue operations. The injured were rushed to hospital in Pilibhit and nearby Bareilly district.

According to the local police, seven passengers died on the spot, whereas two passengers succumbed to their injuries later. The injured passengers are undergoing treatment at the district hospital.  Most of the passengers are from Pilibhit and adjoining areas.

What did SP say?

Pilibhit SP Jaiprakash Yadav said: “In an early morning accident involving a jeep and roadways bus, which took place in Puranpur area of the district, nine persons were killed, while over 30 persons injured.”

Yadav added that the accident seems to have happened due to negligence of the bus driver. He said: “The bus was on its way to Puranpur from Lucknow. The bus rolled down the road into a nearby field after the collision. A total of 50 passengers were in both the vehicles of which seven were declared brought dead at a hospital and around 30 others are injured.”

“Some of the passengers of the bus have informed us that the bus driver failed to see the SUV and collided with it. The matter will be probed and action will be taken against the guilty,” said Prakash, who visited the injured in the hospitals they have been admitted to.

Uttar Pradesh CM offers condolence

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment of the injured. He also announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to each of the families of the victims.
