The US is working on a temporary ban the issuance of some work visas like H-1B and others. The ban is also likely to cover students visas and work authorisation that is given to them post studies. H-1B visas are highly popular among Indian IT companies and Indians account for the majority of the visa holders.
The decision, according to media reports, is likely to come as the US faces a high level of unemployment due to the Covid19 pandemic. Over 5,00,000 migrants are working in the US on a H-1B status.
American news media outlets reported that the president’s immigration advisers are readying an executive order that is expected to come this month. The order is likely to cover H-1B and H-2B visas as well as visas for seasonal migrant workers and student visas with work authorization.
More than 33 million Americans have lost their jobs in the last two months due to Covid19 pandemic and the US economy is expected to see a 15% to 20% growth in the second quarter.
Earlier four Republican senators had also written to the president seeing a similar ban arguing that such jobs should go to new graduates in the US.
