Washington: Russia may have announced that it is withdrawing its troops from Ukraine border, indicating de-escalation of the tension that had been mounting over the recent past. But, the United States does not seem to be in a mood to believe the claims.

A senior official in the Joe Biden government claimed that the country may have in fact increased its military presence in the region.

The official was quoted as saying, “… the Russian government said it was withdrawing troops from the border of Ukraine… But we now know it was false”.

According to the official, it may have added as many as 7,000 troops to Ukraine border in recent days.

As per a statement by the White House, Biden spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday.

The leaders discussed their respective conversations with presidents of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, regarding Russia’s continued military build-up on Ukraine’s borders. They reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and underscored the importance of continued transatlantic coordination on diplomacy and deterrence measures and the reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank if Russia further invades Ukraine.
