As dissent in Punjab grows, Congress calls urgent meeting of MLAs on Saturday

  • Several Congress MLAs had made representation seeking a legislative party meeting, said AICC general secretary Harish Rawat

Chandigarh: With the rift within the Punjab unit of Congress increasing, the party high command has called for an urgent meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Saturday.

The meeting will be held at 5 pm at the office of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) in Chandigarh on Saturday.

The announcement of the meeting was made by All India Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge of the state Harish Rawat on Friday night.

According to him, a large number of Congress MLAs in Punjab had made a representation to AICC, seeking a CLP meeting.

“The AICC has received a representation from a large number of MLAs from the congress party, requesting to immediately convene a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party of Punjab. Accordingly, a meeting of the CLP has been convened at 5:00 PM on 18th September at Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee office,” said Rawat in a tweet. He added that PPCC had been directed to facilitate the meeting and requested all Congress MLAs in the state to attend it.

The growing clashes between Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and state Congress president Navjyot Singh Sidhu are no secret. Last month, four ministers and several party MLAs had announced that they did not have faith in Amarinder Singh’s ability to honour unfulfilled promises.
