Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and one of BJP’s most popular leaders, Yogi Adityanath, will contest the upcoming state Assembly elections from Gorakhpur, his stronghold for past several years.

This is for the first time that Yogi Adityanath will fight in Assembly elections. He was elected Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur for five consecutive terms since 1998. He was sworn in as UP CM in March 2017.

There was a strong buzz that Adityanath would be given a ticket from Ayodhya or Mathura. However, when the BJP announced its first list of 107 candidates for the UP Assembly elections, it named him as the candidate from Gorakhpur.

After the announcement, he thanked the BJP for the opportunity.

Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya will fight from Sirathu seat in Prayagraj district.

Taking a swipe at Adityanath, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said he was happy that the BJP sent him home (Gorakhpur) already. “I feel he will have to stay there… He does not need to come back,” said Yadav.

Elections in UP will be held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7.

BJP has already been facing a turmoil with 10 of its MLAs having resigned from the party ahead of the elections.
