The Food and Drug Control department has raided a unit in Ahmedabad for manufacturing sanitisers without valid approvals. The raids were carried out in Krishnanagar Society near Bharwad Vas in Makarba.
A tip-off had informed the officials that fake sanitisers under the brand name Jyoti Herbals were being manufactured at the address. Officials from both Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad raided the place and recovered several brands of sanitiser.
The cops also nabbed one Meet Patel, a resident of Satellite. They recovered sanitisers under the brand name Clearwell Alcoholic Handrub by Jyoti Herbals, a company in Mehsana and Prece Instant Sanitiser by Galdium Product Private Ltd, a brand from Gandhinagar.
It also recovered batches of hair removal cream Dawn of Mane, manufactured by Beauty Concept in Sarkhej.
What the raid revealed
The department has seized the goods for sample testing as well as the raw material and machinery. Meet Patel, the man accused of running the manufacturing unit, revealed that he began manufacturing the sanitizers since the lockdown came into force.
He confessed to having brought Rs 18 lakh worth of denatured alcohol. He also confessed to manufacturing and selling it in the interior parts of the district. He neither got his products tested nor did he get any approval for the same.
In all, the department has seized goods and machinery worth Rs34 lakh in the raid.
The department also said that Jyoti Herbals, the company who was selling the fake sanitisers does not have the licence to sell allopathic medicines or beauty products.
The department is also investigating the customers who bought the products and the alcohol that has been sourced to manufacture the same.
It has also emerged that the Prece Instant Hair Removal product is a fake one and is not manufactured by the original manufacturer.
