Union minister asks Ramdev to “withdraw statement” on allopathy after IMA’s pressure

After controversy erupted over Baba Ramdev’s comment over allopathy, Union health minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday wrote a two-page letter asking him to retract his statement while asserting that the yoga guru’s statement has disrespected India’s COVID warriors.

Notably, the development comes after the doctors’ body warned the Centre of protest and legal action for not taking any action against Ramdev.

What Harsh Vardhan said

The Union health minister in his letter to the yoga guru said, “The people of the country are very hurt with your remark on allopathic medicines. I have already told you about this feeling over the phone. Doctors and health workers are like gods for the people of the country for whom they are fighting against the coronavirus risking their lives.”

“You have not only insulted COVID warriors, but have hurt the feelings of the people of the country. Your clarification yesterday is not enough to make up for it… I hope you will think hard on it and withdraw your statements completely,” he added.

Ramdev’s statement & IMA’s reaction

A video went viral in which Ramdev was heard saying at a recent event, “Lakhs of people have died because of allopathic medicines, far more than those who died because they did not get treatment or oxygen.” He also purportedly called allopathy a “stupid and bankrupt” science.

After the video emerged, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) sent a legal notice to Ramdev demanding a written apology for his statement. In a statement on Saturday, the IMA said that the yoga guru should be prosecuted under the Epidemic Diseases Act because his “untutored” statements are “a threat to the literate society of the country as well as to the poor people falling prey to him.”

“If the minister (Harsh Vardhan) does not take suo motu action, we will be forced to resort to democratic means of struggle to propagate the truth to the common man. We will knock at the doors of the judiciary to get due justice,” the IMA had said.

Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust said that the yoga guru’s remarks were taken out of context.
