The Covid19 pandemic in the state and the resultant lockdown has led to incidents of suicide being reported from across the state due to shortage of tobacco and alcohol for addicts who are unable to get their daily high.
In one such incident, a youth in Rajkot, unable to get maavo (tobacco) drank acid to commit suicide. He was rushed to the local hospital where his condition is reported to be stable. 18-year-old Dhandeep Parmar, a resident of Ambedkarnagar in Rajkot attempted suicide by consuming acid. Investigations revealed that he had been unable to get tobacco for the last three days and was suffering from withdrawal symptoms. He took the extreme step as he was unable to cope with the withdrawal.
It should be noted that tobacco and paan shops in the state have not had permission to open irrespective of the zones that they operate from. As a result, there has been a shortage of it for tobacco addicts in the state. Earlier two people had committed suicide after being unable to get bidis. A video of people crowding the one single paan shop that had opened in Surendranagar had also gone viral. In the video people were seen trying to gain entry into the small shop by climbing atop each other.
