Amid Ukraine crisis, Indian Embassy advises its citizens to leave ‘temporarily’

Kyiv: Looking at the mounting tension in Ukraine, the Indian embassy in Kyiv on Tuesday issued a statement advising Indian nationals to consider leaving the country temporarily.

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have been escalating for the past few weeks. There were reports that Russia could invade the former on Wednesday.

While Russia has maintained that all the talks about a possible invasion are “lies”, the US and others have remained wary.

Meanwhile, in an indication of some sort of de-escalation, Russia announced that it was withdrawing some of its forces from the border. The forces would return to their base.

However, amid the uncertainties, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv urged its citizens to exercise caution.

“In view of the uncertainties of the current situation in Ukraine, Indian nationals in Ukraine, particularly students whose stay is not essential, may consider leaving temporarily,” the statement by the embassy said.

It advised Indian nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to and within the country.

The Indian nationals “… are requested to keep the Embassy informed about the status of their presence” in the country to enable the latter to reach them when required, the statement said.

The embassy would continue to function normally, it added.
