UGC nod for dual degree courses in India but via different modes

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a proposal that will allow students to take up two degree courses simultaneously, a media report said. However, unlike other countries, in India only one of the courses can be pursued like a regular degree, while the other will have to be taught through online distance learning (ODL).

This means if a student is pursuing B.Tech as a regular student from an engineering college, they can pursue any other degree level programme through online distance learning only.

Further details are likely to be available as and when the notification is issued.

Last year a committee headed by UGC Vice-Chairman Bhushan Patwardan was formed to look into ways and means to introduce dual degrees from the same or different universities through either distance, online or a part-time mode. The committee came up with a proposal after assessing feedback provided from various stakeholders.

Earlier, a similar committee under the chairmanship of V-C of Hyderabad University Furqan Qamar was formed in 2012 to explore the possibility of providing dual degrees, but the plan had failed to take off.
