New Delhi: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray approached the Supreme Court on Monday against the decision of new Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar to recognise an MLA from the Eknath Shinde faction as the chief whip of Shiv Sena.

The petition was made just before the floor test.

A letter by the Maharashtra Deputy Speaker, on instructions of the Speaker, stated that Eknath Shinde would be the Shiv Sena Legislative Party leader and Bharat Gogawale would be the chief whip of the party.

The Speaker also put aside the appointment of Ajay Chaudhary as the legislative party leader.

Senior advocated AM Singhvi, appearing on behalf of Uddhav Thackeray, argued that it was not the Speaker’s jurisdiction to recognise whips. “This is changing the status quo of proceedings before this court. The Speaker yesterday at the stroke of pen at midnight elected the whip,” he said.

The court has agreed to hear the fresh petition on July 11, along with other pending petitions.

Alongside, CM Eknath Shinde won the floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly by 164-99 votes.
