Two families in Bodeli Taluka of Chhota Udepur are waiting for a DNA test to embrace the newborns born to them. The families had to resort to a DNA test to know which child belonged to whom after a nurse handed over the wrong child to the wrong family.

Local reports said two women gave birth to a baby girl and a baby boy each on Saturday at the Jambugam referral hospital. The first woman gave birth to a girl child who was shifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the second woman delivered a baby boy. When the nurse brought the baby boy outside, the family of the first woman thinking it was their child went to accept it. The nurse gave them the baby without asking their name.

The doctor who had delivered the baby girl soon found the woman holding a baby boy and communicated the error. But the family was reluctant to give up the child. Local media quoted officials as saying that it was a case of miscommunication.

Media reports said soon both families began to claim the baby boy as their own. The hospital then suggested a DNA test so that each family could be convinced that they have their own child. The families said that they were not worried about the gender but that they did not want any confusion regarding the identity of their child. The DNA test results will be available in a week.
