Twitter reacts to suspension of Rahul Gandhi’s account

  • Says account is locked if tweet poses threat; Rahul Gandhi’s account was suspended ‘temporarily’ after he posted photo of Delhi rape victim’s family

New Delhi: Micro-blogging site Twitter said in a statement that the account of a user is locked if there is a violation or safety and security threat to an individual because of a tweet posted on it.

The statement comes two days after the Twitter account of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was suspended “temporarily”. He had last Wednesday gone to visit the family of a nine-year-old girl who had been raped and killed in Delhi. He had later posted the photo of the family on his Twitter account.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had taken strong objection to the photo, saying that it showed the parents’ face clearly and could thus reveal the identity of the rape victim.

It had written to Delhi police and to Twitter to take action against the tweet.

Two days back, a tweet from the official handle of the Congress said that Rahul Gandhi’s account had been suspended temporarily and that he would connect with people on his other accounts.

In a statement, Twitter said the action was taken as per the information shared by the NCPCR according to the guidelines under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

“Our aim is to protect individuals from coming to physical harm as a result of their information being shared on Twitter and certain types of private information carry higher risks than others, and can pose serious safety and security threats. Information shared by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights in their legal request submitted via the India Grievance Channel citing specific provisions of the POCSO Act, provided context and was taken into account for the assessment,” Twitter said, referring to Rahul Gandhi’s tweet.

“We enforce the Twitter Rules judiciously and impartially for everyone on our service. As explained in our Help Center, if a tweet was found to be in violation of the Twitter Rules, and has yet to be deleted by the account holder, we hide it behind a notice and the account remains locked until the tweet is removed or the appeal is successfully processed,” Twitter said in the statement.
