A top-tier football player in Turkey has confessed to killing his 5-year-old son while the boy was being treated for suspicious Covid19 infection in a hospital. The footballer Cevher Toktas, 32, has been arrested by the police. The murder came to light after Toktas handed himself over to police and confessed to the crime. He told the police that he smothered his son, Kasim, with a pillow on May 4 at the state-run hospital, media reports said.
Initially the boy’s death was not suspicious. The boy had tested negative for COVID-19. After his father, confessed to the murder, the child’s body was exhumed for an autopsy as part of the investigation.
Local media reported that Toktas, who plays with amateur league team Bursa Yildirimspor, told police that he tried to suffocate his son as he did not love him. He said he decided to turn himself in as he felt remorse for his actions.
The boy was admitted to a children’s hospital in Bursa with a cough and high fever on April 23 and was put under isolation. Media quoted Toktas as saying that he smothered the boy and called for help. The 5-year-old was rushed to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where he died two hours later.
