US President Donald Trump said he would permanently freeze funding to the World Health Organisation (WHO) if it did not show ‘independence’ from China within a month. Trump also warned the UN health body that he would reconsider America’s membership in WHO.
Earlier in April, Trump had halted America’s funding of up to $500 million annually to WHO after he accused the organisation of “severely mismanaging and covering up” the spread of Covid19 under pressure from China.
In a letter to WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom, Trump said,”It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organisation in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the WHO is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China.”
He further said in the letter that if the WHO does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, he will make the temporary freeze of United States funding to the WHO as permanent and reconsider US’ membership in the organisation.
“I cannot allow American taxpayer dollars to continue to finance an organisation that, in its present state, is so clearly not serving America’s interests,” he added.
