  • Stresses on the need to ‘vocal for local’ as he calls for benefits of toy economy to be taken to local artisans

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday interacted with participants of Toycathon-2021 via video-conferencing. He emphasized on the economic aspects and called for attention to ‘Toyconomy’ while talking about the importance of toys beyond being the “first friends of children”,

The global toy market is about $ 100 billion, in which India has just 1.5 per cent share, he said, adding that the country has been importing nearly 80 per cent of its toys.

‘Need to be vocal for local toys’

The toy sector in the country has the capacity to bring progress and growth, Modi said while addressing the Toycathon participants. He pointed out that the toy industry has artisans comprising women, rural population, dalits, poor, people and tribals. To help them get the benefits of the toy economy, he said that there was need to be vocal for local toys.

He called for new models of innovation and financing to make Indian toys competitive at the global level.

He also stressed on the need for new ideas to be incubated, new start-ups to be promoted, new technology to be taken to traditional toy makers and new market demand to be created.

He told the Toycathon participants that toys could play a big role in letting the world know about India’s capabilities, art and culture. Ruing the fact that most of the online and digital games in the market were not based on Indian concepts, he said India has ample content and competence for digital gaming. He called upon young innovators and start-ups to be mindful of their responsibility of projecting the true picture of India’s capabilities and ideas to the world.

“The 75th anniversary of Indian Independence is a huge opportunity for innovators and creators of the toy industry. Many incidents, stories of our freedom fighters and their valour and leadership can be created into gaming concepts,” Modi said.

In his tweet, railway minister Piyush Goyal said that Toycathon would drive Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
