Thiruvananthapuram: Having come under severe criticism from the Supreme Court for announcing easing of Covid-related restrictions for Bakri Eid, the Kerala government on Wednesday announced total lockdown on July 24 and 25.
The Pinnarayi Vijayan-led government had earlier announced three-day relaxation for Bakri Eid. The move did not go well with the SC which called it alarming and wholly uncalled for. It had on Monday asked Kerala government to file its reply to a plea against the relaxation.
Kerala reported 17,481 new cases of Covid-19 and 105 deaths on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, while announcing the total lockdown during the weekend, the government asked the health department to carry out mass testing on Friday, and keep a target of 3 lakh tests during the day. Those districts where seven-day test positivity rate is higher than 10 per cent will see greater focus.
District collectors have been asked to identify and demarcate micro-containment zones in all districts. Testing will be immediately ramped up in these areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, had recently harped upon increased focus on tracing, testing and treating, urging states to focus on micro-containment strategy.
