The exodus of leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) continues unabated with party MP Dinesh Trivedi announcing his resignation from the Rajya Sabha on Friday. There are speculations that Trivedi will be soon joining the saffron party ahead of the Assembly elections in West Bengal. However, the MP has not said anything in this regard.
The announcement regarding the resignation was made by Dinesh Trivedi himself during the debate on Budget in the Parliament. He said that he felt helpless about the political violence in West Bengal. Trivedi has already tendered his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu.
What did Dinesh Trivedi say?
Dinesh Trivedi said, “The kind of violence that is happening in Bengal, it is a threat to democracy. I feel very strange sitting here. I think of what I should do. I think of Rabindranath Tagore. Obey party discipline? Of course, but I feel stifled. My soul is saying I sit here and say nothing, what is the point? I resign.”
He said that he wants to go back and work for his state and the country. Trivedi said that he is grateful to TMC for sending him to Rajya Sabha.
“Grateful to my party that they have sent me here. I am feeling suffocated that we are not able to do anything over violence in the state. My soul tells me that if you cannot do anything sitting here, then you must resign. I will continue to work for the people of West Bengal,” he said.
On speculations that Dinesh Trivedi might join the BJP, the party’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said, “I thought Dinesh ji has delayed his decision. It took him one year since he last spoke to me about the TMC. Any respectful person will do this. Dinesh ji has not spoken to the BJP as of now.”
Two days back, Dinesh Trivedi had appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his speech in the Rajya Sabha where he spoke about welfare in the private sector in India.
Sharing part of PM Modi’s speech, Dinesh Trivedi had tweeted, “I am personally in agreement with this. The way forward is to let our young talented mind innovate, create and distribute wealth. Pay government levies, create jobs. For that, our govt officers (babus) too, need to encourage the youth.”
