Five lawmakers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have written to President Ram Nath Kovind seeking the removal of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. The letter, which is critical of the governor for interfering with the state legislature, has been written by TMC MPs Derek O’Brien, Kalyan Banerjee, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

Notably, the development comes at a time when Assembly elections are due in Bengal in April-May of next year. The political atmosphere is charged up with the BJP leaving no stone unturned to snatch power from the ruling TMC.

TMC alleges political bias

The letter provides, “Interminable critical tweets and statements directed against the West Bengal Government, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, AITC – with a political bias – are likely to cause law and order problem. Besides, such tendencies and inclinations on the part of the Constitutional head of the State to openly support a political party strikes at the very root of federalism.”

Dhankhar had often criticised the Mamata Banerjee government over the law and order situation in the state, the state government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis and stand taken by the TMC government on other issues. The MPs have alleged the governor of transgressing upon authorities such as the Election Commission and Comptroller and Auditor General.

The MPs, in the letter, also said, “Hon’ble Shri Dhankhar has also not spared the State Legislature. He is sitting tight and refuses to sign a number of Bills passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Not only is he not signing the bills, he is even asking for “explanations” from the Hon’ble Speaker. This is a direct insult and attack on the Sovereignty of the State Legislature.”

Referring to the attack on the convoy of BJP national president JP Nadda and BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, the MPs criticised the governor for seeking an apology from the CM on the issue.

BJP reacts

The BJP, justifying the governor, has said that he is acting within his constitutional parameters and that the ruling party is afraid. A BJP leader said that the letter will have no impact as the President will go by his own understanding of the governor’s role.
