TikTok, UC Browser and other Chinese applications are among the 59 apps with Chinese links that have been blocked by government amid tension with China
Media reports quoted a government press release as stating that in view of the emergent nature of threats, it has decided to block 59 apps as they are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.
The press release also said that earlier the government had received many representations raising concerns from citizens about the security of data and risk to privacy relating to these applications.
TikTok, the most popular Chinese app has the maximum number of users in India, followed by China and the US. Of its 2 billion users India accounted for over 611 million downloads.
Some of the other apps that have been blocked include Shareit, Helo, WeChat, UC News among others.
