Panaji: The matter of killing tigers was discussed on Wednesday in Goa Assembly, about which Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao said that when humans are punished for killing tigers, then tigers should be “punished” for eating cows for the same.
On the other hand, amidst the opposition’s demand for a comprehensive investigation into tiger killings, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday that efforts were on to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future. Last month, a tiger and three of its cubs were killed by five locals at the Mahadayi Wildlife Sanctuary. There was a lot of ruckus about this. Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat raised this issue while presenting a call for attention on the floor of the House during the Assembly session. Opposition leaders, including Goa Forward Party MLA Vijay Sardesai and Independent MLA Rohan Khonte demanded from central agencies that the possibility of involvement of poaching gangs or mining gangs in the killings should be investigated.
Sawant said, “We have taken precautionary steps to ensure that such killings do not happen again.” Responding to the calling attention motion, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, “locals had killed the tigers as the wild cats had attacked their livestock. A compensation would be paid within three or four days to farmers who have lost their cattle to animal attacks.”
