The Centre will be sending a three-member multi-disciplinary team to three districts of Gujarat that are recording a high number of COVID-19 cases. The team will do a direct monitoring of the situation and assist Gujarat in management of the pandemic.
The three-member team includes two public health experts—an epidemiologist and a clinician— and a senior joint secretary level nodal officer. The latter will help with administrative matters related to COVID-19 management and technical support for containment measures.
The team is part of the 15 special teams that are being sent to 50 districts of 15 states that are registering a high burden of COVID-19. The 15 states that have reported a surge in cases over the past few weeks are Maharashtra (7 districts), Tamil Nadu (7), Assam (6), Madhya Pradesh (5), Rajasthan (5), Odisha (5), Telangana (4), Haryana (4), Karnataka (4), Uttar Pradesh (4), Bihar (4), Gujarat (3), Uttarakhand (3), West Bengal (3) and Delhi (3).
A health ministry official was quoted by the media as saying that large clustering of COVID-19 has been reported from some districts in all the 15 states and the teams will assist the state in determining better containment and clinical management of cases. The official said they will help the state chalk out area-specific plans.
