The Mahagujarat Bank Employees’ Association in Surat wants operations to be restricted in containment zones

The Mahagujarat Bank Employees’ Association has written to the Surat Municipal Commissioner Banchanidhi Pani and District Collector Dr Dhaval Patel asking that banks in contaminants zones be either closed or their operations restricted.

Surat has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases. The association has said that many of the banks are operating from COVID-19 hotspots of Surat.

The Mahagujarat Bank Employees’ Association wants the operations to be held from 10 am to 2 pm with 50% staff if they are in the containment zone.

The memorandum by the association said that bank employees are at risk as they often come in contact with customers who may be infected. Moreover, physical exchange of documents also puts them at risk.

It has also demanded that employees who live in containment zones be allowed to work from home.

Media reports quoted The Mahagujarat Bank Employees’ Association as saying that over 40 bank employees from different banks have tested positive. They said the memorandum was to save the lives of bank employees.

Surat has around 15,000 bank employees. One bank employee of State Bank of India had succumbed to COVID-19 in Surat.
