Texas: In what has emerged as the deadliest school shooting in the United States of America in years, a teenager opened fire in an elementary school in Texas, killing at least 19 children and a teacher. He was later killed by the security personnel responding to the attack.

The gunman had fired at his own grandmother before he went to the school.

The teen, aged 18, was identified as Salvador Ramos by  Texas Governor Greg Abbott at a press conference.

According to police, Ramos had a handgun and a rifle and wore a body armour.

President Biden denounces US gun lobby

In the aftermath of the shooting, US President Joe Biden denounced the gun lobby in the country, even as he vowed to end the trend of mass shootings in the US.

“To lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,” he said, adding, “As a nation, we have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?”

Former US president Barack Obama said, “Our country is paralysed not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that migh help prevent these tragedies,”

Angered netizens also took to social media platforms to criticise the gun laws in Texas, with some of them claiming it was easier to own a gun than to vote there.
