Teachers recruitment protest in Rajasthan shuts down highway from Shamlaji to Udaipur


The protest over a teachers recruitment exam in Rajasthan has singed Gujarat too resulting in the highway connecting Gujarat and Rajasthan being closed.

The protest turned violent on the Shamlaji highway on Thursday with the Aravali police in Gujarat stepping in to prevent the crowd from going berserk.

Officials have also shut down the Shamlaji-Udaipur national highway

As violence was being reported near Dungarpur, Shyamlaji police had diverted the traffic passing along the route.

All the traffic to Udaipur was diverted from Bhiloda towards Ambaji, Abu Road. The protest also found support from Adivasi students of North Gujarat.

The violence that erupted near Kankri Dungre saw heavy stone pelting and four cars being set afire. The protest over reservation in Rajasthan also led to heavy deployment of police on the Ahmedabad- Udaipur highway.

What is the teachers recruitment protest in Rajasthan about?

The protestors are demanding that vacancies in a teachers recruitment examination in the unreserved section be filled with the Scheduled Tribe-category candidates.

The candidates of the 2018 teachers’ recruitment exam have been protesting for over the past fortnight to press for their demand to fill 1,167 general posts with ST-category candidates in Rajasthan.

Cops also arrested three persons in connection with the violence in Dungarpur and two police officials- an assistant superintendent of police and a station house officer – sustained minor injuries.
