Tapi BJP leader Kanti Gamit was arrested on Wednesday after a video of the engagement ceremony of his granddaughter went viral. Thousands gathered at the event sans any mask or social distancing.
This is the first instance of a leader in Gujarat being arrested for violation of COVID norms.
A former minister in the BJP government, Kanti Gamit was booked under section 308. A case has also been registered against his son Jitu Gamit for violating COVID norms. Kanti Gamit has also been booked under sections 188, 269, and 270 and also several sections of the Epidemic Act.
The government had come under severe criticism after the video of thousands gathering at the engagement ceremony of Kanti Gamit’s granddaughter went viral. This came at a time when Gujarat registered a surge in COVID-19 cases post-Diwali.
The Gujarat high court also came down heavily on the police and the administration for allowing the event to take place.
What Kanti Gamit said
Kanit Gamit later told the media that allowing such a large gathering at the function was a mistake.
“I apologise as it was a mistake. We had organised Tulsi Vivah and my granddaughter’s engagement ceremony together but didn’t invite anyone personally. We’d prepared food for 2000 people and also organised a dance. Someone made the video & it went viral,” news agency ANI quoted Gamit, as saying.
Media reports said the event took place on November 30 at Doswada village in Tapi district. The Gujarat government had last month imposed a night curfew in Rajkot, Surat, and Vadodara and also a 57-hour curfew in Ahmedabad to curb the rise in COVID cases.
The night curfew continues to be implemented. Gujarat has recorded over 2.11 lakh COVID cases and over 4,000 deaths.
