Ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, Rajnikanth to launch political party in January

In a development that will surely impact political equations before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled next year, superstar Rajnikanth on Thursday announced that he will launch his political party in 2021. The actor said the exact date of the launch will be revealed on December 31.

Notably, Rajnikanth has on December 31, 2017, announced his willingness to enter politics and contest the 2021 Assembly polls.

Rajnikanth promises new kind of politics

Rajinikanth has promised a new kind of politics in a state that has been dominated by the two Dravidian parties.

“We will change everything. If not now never. In the coming Assembly elections, we will win with the huge support of the people and will roll out honest, transparent, corruption-free, secular and spiritual politics in Tamil Nadu. Miracle will happen,” he said in a Tamil tweet on Thursday morning.

“Political and government changes in Tamil Nadu are a compulsion of our times. My supporters have been waiting for so long. I also owe it to them. I do not mind sacrificing my life for the people of Tamil Nadu,” he said.

The superstar added, “If I win it will be the people’s victory, even if I lose it will be their defeat.”

Rajinikanth and another actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan are likely to be the x-factors in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

Health concerns

Rajinikanth went on social media in October to clarify reports that he was in two minds about his political plans because of his health. The speculation was fueled by a leaked letter, believed to have been written by him.

The letter seemed to indicate that the veteran actor had been advised by doctors to restrict his movements since his renal transplant and could be even more vulnerable to COVID-19. The doctors reportedly advised him that a vaccine was the only solution and they were not sure if his body would even accept it.

Stating that he would announce his stand at an “appropriate time”, the actor clarified: “The letter is not mine but the information on my health and doctors’ advice is true.”
