- The Taliban insurgents claimed victory over the southern city a day of Lashkar Gah after taking over Kandahar and Herat
Kabul: One more city of Afghanistan fell to insurgents. A day after taking over two of the three biggest cities of Afghanistan, the Taliban claimed victory over the city of Lashkar Gah on Friday in the southern province of Helmand.
There were reports of around 1,500 soldiers surrendering to the Taliban.
On Thursday, the Taliban had declared victory over Kandahar and Herat, the second and third largest cities of Afghanistan. Soon enough, all embassies and agencies began evacuation of their staff from the country.
It may be recalled that the Indian embassy in Kabul, too, had issued a similar advisory asking employers to withdraw their staff from the distressed region. It had also started evacuation flights, and urged all Indian citizens to get themselves registered at the embassy.
The US said it would deploy 3,000 troops to facilitate safe return of its people, while the Britain said it would send 600 troops for the same.
