Taliban announces general amnesty for all govt officials, urges them to return to work

At a time when thousands of Afghans want to escape from Afghanistan in a bid to escape from the Taliban rule, the terror group on Tuesday declared a general amnesty for all government officials. It has asked them to return to work after taking control of the country as Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

“A general amnesty has been declared for all… so you should start your routine life with full confidence,” said a statement from the Taliban. Notably, unlike the previous tenure, the Taliban is trying to project a better image of itself as the country remains under international scrutiny. The lack of trust in the Taliban is a clear indicator that has emerged from the Afghanistan unrest which is evident as thousands of people thronged the Kabul airport to escape from Taliban rule.

Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan’s first and youngest female mayor has said that after the Taliban takeover, now she has lost all hope and it is only a matter of time that she will be killed. She said, “I am sitting here waiting for them to come. There is no one to help me or my family. I am just sitting with them and my husband. And they will come for people like me and kill me.”

UK warns Taliban

The UK has cautioned the Taliban that Afghanistan must never be used to launch terror attacks and also added that the West must try to positively influence the insurgents who have grabbed power after the United States withdrew its forces. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the West would have to be pragmatic in its relations with the Taliban and try to see if it could moderate the new rulers of Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) economy commissioner has said Europe needs to create humanitarian corridors to avoid the risk of illegal flows of immigrants from Afghanistan as thousands of Afghans attempt to flee the country in a desperate bid to escape the Taliban rule.
