International support for Taiwan is shrinking. Now, the government of Nicaragua has officially broken all diplomatic ties with it. The former announced in a statement that it recognizes just the People’s Republic of China.

“The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,” the Nicaraguan government said in its statement.

Alongside, it officially reestablished diplomatic ties with China on Friday.

Lauding the move, China said that Nicaragua had made the “correct choice”.

China has claimed that Taiwan is a part of its territory.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said the island would not bow to pressure.

No amount of external pressure can shake our commitment to freedom, human rights, the rule of law & to partnering with the international democratic community as a force for good,” she said. The country now has just 14 allies left.

The move, not surprisingly, has angered the United States which has said that Nicaragua’s statement does not reflect the will of its people.

Spokesperson Ned Price said, “We do know, however, that this deprives Nicaragua’s people of a steadfast partner in its democratic and economic growth.” US has called for democracies to expand engagement with Taiwan.
