Wrestler Sushil Kumar to stay in jail in murder case

India’s two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar is going to stay in jail with a Delhi court on Friday extending his judicial custody till July 9. He has been charged for the murder of a young wrestler at Chhatrasal Stadium. Sushil Kumar had won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.

The wrestler was produced before a metropolitan magistrate court that extended his judicial custody. Kumar has been shifted to Tihar jail number 2 from Mandoli jail where he was earlier kept. The Delhi Police has claimed that Sushil Kumar is the mastermind behind the murder and there is electronic evidence against him.

Sushil Kumar arrested last month

After evading arrest for nearly 20 days, Sushil Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 23 in connection with the brawl at Chhatrasal Stadium that led to the death of a 23-year-old wrestler, Sagar Rana.

Apart from Sushil Kumar, the police also arrested his aide Ajay Kumar, who was accompanying him since the murder, from Delhi’s Mundka area while they were on their way to meet someone on a scooter.

On May 18, Sushil Kumar had approached the Rohini court seeking protection from arrest, claiming that the probe against him was biased and that no injuries caused to the victim were attributable to him. The court, however, dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, saying he was prima facie the main conspirator and allegations against him were serious in nature.

The crime

As per the case details, the deceased and his two friends were allegedly assaulted by Sushil Kumar and other wrestlers inside Chhatrasal Stadium in northern Delhi on the intervening night of May 4. Kumar, 37, had been evading arrest since the incident. Police have charged Kumar with abduction, criminal conspiracy and murder.

The Delhi Police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Sushil Kumar, who had been on the run since the incident. Another reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for Ajay Kumar’s arrest. Police have been raiding several places in Delhi and its surrounding cities, and neighbouring states, to arrest the champion wrestler.
