A 108 ambulance driver has been booked by the Surat police after an alleged audio clip of his went viral in which he is heard saying that bodies of 70-80 people, who died of COVID-19, are lying at the Surat Civil Hospital. The accused, identified as one Rameshbhai, has been booked under the Disaster Management Act for spreading false information. In the eight minute audio clip, a telephonic conversation between the accused and one Chandubhai, the former is heard making the claim that he counted 70 to 80 bodies at the Surat Civil Hospital. “On July 12, an audio clip of a 108 ambulance driver named Rameshbhai went viral. In the clip he made baseless and exaggerated claims that 70 to 80 bodies were lying at the Civil Hospital for which he had to carry out the burial process. The audio clip claimed that there is no space at the hospital. Such clips create an atmosphere of fear and chaos in the public amid the pandemic. The accused has been booked and a probe has been ordered,” a statement from the detection of crime branch, Surat said.
