The Surat Municipal Commissioner, Banchhanidhi Pani, has asked all paan shops in hotspot areas of Katargam, Varachha and Sarthana to be closed to prevent further spread of COVID-19 in the district.
Surat is fast emerging as the next hotspot after Ahmedabad and this had forced Principal Secretary, Health, Jayanti Ravi to camp in the city for three days since Sunday. Earlier she had stressed on breaking the transmission chain to contain the COVID-19 spread.
Govt officials have attributed the opening gof diamond units following Unlock 1.0 as the main cause of spread of disease. Over 500 such workers and their relatives have tested positive for the disease . This had forced the SMC to order closure of diamond polishing units for one week, starting from June 30. The order came after it came to light that workers were working without masks and were reporting to work even when sick to save their jobs. The officials are hoping that the closing of paan shops and diamond units will help break the chain.
