New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre following concerns raised regarding vaccination of pregnant and lactating women.

The Apex Court was hearing a writ petition by the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR).

The petition had been filed in May this year amid the second wave of Covid-19, challenging exclusion of women pregnant and lactating women from vaccination against the infection. Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for DCPCR, informed the bench that the Union government had issued operational guidelines for vaccination of pregnant and lactating women. However, she submitted, some of the concerns remained unaddressed.

She said that there was a need to categorize such women as high-risk categories and to give them priority for vaccination. She added scientific research should be conducted to know the effect of Covid-19 vaccine on pregnant and lactating women as “we are dealing with a virus we don’t know about”.

While issuing the notice, the Supreme Court bench sought the assistance of the Solicitor General on the policy formulated and applicable guidelines to be framed.

The matter will be heard in two weeks.

Another SC notice to Centre on vaccination of persons with disabilities

In a separate hearing, the Supreme Court asked the government to explain steps taken to facilitate easy access to Covid-19 vaccine by persons with disabilities. It was hearing a writ petition seeking facilities for vaccination of such persons.
